Who gets angina?

Chronic angina is often a symptom of a heart problem. The heart problem that most commonly causes angina is coronary heart disease (CHD), also known as coronary artery disease (CAD).2 If you are at risk for CHD, you are also at risk for angina.2

Risk factors for CHD include:2

  • High cholesterol levels
  • High blood pressure
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Overweight or obese
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Age (risk increases for men after 45 years old and for women after 55 years old)
  • Family history of heart disease

Angina occurs equally among women and men.2
