Who gets angina?

Chronic angina is often a symptom of a heart problem. The heart problem that most commonly causes angina is coronary heart disease (CHD), also known as coronary artery disease (CAD).2 If you have risk factors for CHD, you also have risk factors for angina.2

Risk factors for CHD include:2

  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Age: Higher risk for men over 45 years old and women over 55 years old
  • Heart disease in your family

Angina occurs equally among women and men.2

*If you have angina that does not go away with rest or nitroglycerin, get emergency medical help right away.
