Reducing angina symptoms

There are many ways to treat chronic angina. Your cardiologist may suggest one or more of the options below based on your symptoms, health, and medical history.1 Click on the tabs to learn more.

Cardiac rehabilitation

Cardiac rehabilitation (rehab) is a program to help1,13:

  • increase your physical fitness
  • improve your health
  • decrease risk factors for coronary heart disease

The program brings together doctors, nurses, exercise specialists, nutritionists, psychologists, and other healthcare specialists.1

Your doctor may recommend a cardiac rehab program designed to fit your needs. A rehab program may involve1,13:

  • Medical exam to see what you need and what you can do
  • Physical activity or training where your heart rate and blood pressure are monitored
  • Counseling and education to understand your heart problem
  • Support and training to help you return to your normal activities

Speak with your cardiologist to see if a cardiac rehab program is right for you. Exercise training may not be safe for all patients.1

The goal in treating chronic angina is to12:

  • Reduce or eliminate pain and discomfort
  • Allow a return to normal activities

*If you have angina that does not go away with rest or nitroglycerin, get emergency medical help right away.

If you still have angina even though you are getting treatment, talk with your doctor about your options.
